Supply Chain Optimization

Client: Weyerhaeuser is a global leader in sustainable forest products and one of the largest producers of softwood lumber, pulp, and paper packaging products. SSI partnered with Weyerhaeuser’s Fine Papers Division for this project.

Challenge: Following its acquisition of Willamette Industries’ Fine Papers Division, Weyerhaeuser needed an advanced solution to integrate and optimize the newly expanded supply chain. The primary goal was to ensure operational efficiency while reducing costs and leveraging the combined strengths of the two entities.

Solution: SSI developed and implemented a robust supply chain optimization model tailored to Weyerhaeuser’s unique needs. The solution covered all critical aspects, including data fulfillment, procurement planning, manufacturing and finishing processes, distribution planning, and raw materials management. The model optimized internal and external wood fiber sources and provided strategic recommendations for make-or-buy decisions, ensuring seamless integration and improved operational efficiency.

Result: Implementing SSI’s supply chain optimization model yielded substantial financial benefits for the client. Within the first year alone, the company realized cost savings of $11 million. By the third year, the cumulative savings had exceeded $40 million. Beyond financial gains, the optimized supply chain enhanced operational efficiency, streamlined procurement and production processes, and strengthened Weyerhaeuser’s ability to adapt to market demands.
