Challenge: Thomson Reuters sought a next-generation data ingestion system to handle diverse inputs from numerous data vendors. The Thomson Reuters Data Warehouse (TRDW) took feeds from multiple securities data vendors, scrubbed them, and delivered them as market indices and business intelligence to customers. Each vendor’s data arrived in formats such as Excel, .txt, and .csv, requiring custom applications for processing. Challenges included legacy issues like duplicate records and null values, and the need to process and transform terabytes of data in real-time while maintaining impeccable data quality. Stringent business rules had to be defined and implemented, focusing on coding optimization to meet high-performance standards.

Solution: Engineers at SSI pioneered a new model for data ingestion to handle a massive and multi-stream flow of data; this included defining new business rules for the entire ETL (extract, transform, load) process and implementing complex business logic for post-processing tasks like index creation. SSI’s solution ensured data quality through rigorous quality assurance, verifying business logic, and validating ingestion results. The update and post-processing phase converted the data into updated files, which were packaged, licensed, and published for customers. SSI also developed a communicator application, enabling Thomson Reuters’ customers to download and integrate these files into their databases seamlessly.

Result: SSI’s data processing solution was highly optimized, exceeding the clients’ performance and quality expectations. The success of this partnership is epitomized by the MSCI Barra project, where SSI ingested historical index data dating back to 1969.
