Top 5 Cloud Trends from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2018 [Infographic]

Amazon Web Services hosts a cloud conference ‘AWS re:Invent’ every year which comprises of a series of announcements, bootcamps, hackathons, breakout sessions, workshops, and certification opportunities. The conference lasts nearly a week and provides great opportunities to gain information and insights about Amazon’s current products, product launches and services for attendees of all skill levels. The research firm, Wikibon, predicts that by 2022 Amazon Web Services (AWS) will reach $43B in revenue, and be 8.2% of all cloud spending. This shows that Amazon leads ahead of Google and Microsoft in cloud computing.

We revisited the AWS re:Invent 2017 conference to list down few of the emerging cloud trends that are expected to be widely adopted during 2018.

Machine Learning

Businesses and developers need an end-to-end, development to production pipeline for machine learning. Developers without a specialized skill set find the implementation of machine learning models challenging and cumbersome. To address this issue, a set of new machine learning services were released during the cloud conference to help developers and data scientists train, deploy, and manage machine learning models at scale. Some of the services  that are now being widely used are Amazon Rekognition, Amazon Polly, Amazon Lex, Amazon Sagemaker, Amazon Deeplens, and Amazon Comprehend.

Serverless Implementations

Serverless cloud computing allows the developers to develop and run apps and services without having to manage and operate any complex infrastructure of servers.

Serverless is one of the major trends in cloud computing. AWS Lambda, a serverless computing platform that was released in the AWS re:Invent 2014, has undergone incremental updates and enhancements recently that were announced during the conference. The updates include enhanced memory capacity, options for concurrency reservations, traffic shifting and phased deployments with AWS Code Deploy, logging of execution activity via CloudTrail etc. Another service called AWS Serverless Application Repository is also designed to aid in the publication, discovery, and deployment of serverless applications. Amazon Aurora Serverless, is a new auto-scaling configuration designed for highly variable workloads based on the application's needs. These products and services will be widely used in 2018.

Simplified Virtual, Augmented Reality and 3D Graphics

Development of practical and realistic virtual reality environments requires specialized skills and the use of many different tools. The launch of Amazon Sumerian, a new platform for developers, will assist in building and hosting VR, AR and 3D apps quickly and with minimal coding, for smartphones and tablets, head-based displays, digital signage and web browsers.

Voice-Based Digital Initiatives

Technological advancements make our lives comfortable by impersonating how we generally do things. Amazon CTO Werner Vogels describes a future where technology and digital access will be defined by human centricity that starts with the most natural way of interaction, voice. The launch of Amazon Alexa for business makes it certain that conversational interfaces will be the next big thing in the software industry.

Wide Adoption of the Internet of Things and IoT Services

Internet of things has been referred as the buzzword that has been delivering the fastest results so far. IoT devices are now pervasive and the deployment rate is predicted to increase significantly over the coming years.  A series of new Internet of Things services were made public during the AWS re:Invent 2017, including a new operating system called Amazon FreeRTOS, for devices that run on microcontroller units (MCUs). AWS also announced new services and products called IoT one-click, AWS IoT Device Management, AWS IoT Device Defender, AWS IoT Analytics, as well as AWS Greengrass ML Inference.
